Songs of Summer

The official start of Summer is only a few weeks and that means BBQs, Pools, Picnics, Parties… AND Music !!! Depending on your age, and sense of nostalgia, Summer Music can mean alot of different things to alot of different people. Some one who grew up in the 60’s is going to have a different “sense” of Summer Music than someone who grew up in the 90’s (trust me, those who grew up in the 60’s have better taste, (Kidding - kinda sorta). But what if there was an all time list of THE BEST SUMMERTIME music ? How would that even be determined ?

I consulted the lists of three major music “authorities”, BILLBOARD, ROLLING STONE Magaine, and New York Entertainment magazine, TIME-OUT, to see what they listed as the Top 30 Summer Songs of all time. You would think that would be pretty clear and concise, right ? Not necessarily the case… only eight songs appears on all three’s list of thirty best all time songs of summer., and only eleven songs out of thirty appeared on just two of the three of the lists, not counting the above referred to eight.

Summer is my favorite season, hands down. For me, Summer is all about freedom, fun, hanging out with friends, and letting go. Few songs celebrate that more for me than Alice Cooper’s Schools Out, and I’m happy to see it made all three lists. It’s a rockin’ out , dashboard tapping anthem. Even though I’ve been out out school more years than I can remember, Schools Out still has crank it up quality for me. Another of my favorites is Chicago’s Saturday in the ParkSchool’s Out opposite end of the spectrum. It’s just a chillin’ lazy strolling, laid back but happy tune. For me, it’s got summer written all over it. I can easily listen to both of these, one right after the other, and still feel the same.

Other songs are just obvious to be on either of these lists… Summertime Blues, Summer in the City, Hot Fun in the Summertime… all perfect Summer songs..and all made all three of the lists.. but so did Seals and Crofts' Summer Breeze… really ? I’m not sure I’m board with that. Good, slow song, but a Summer song? And somebody please tell me how The Beatles Here Comes the Sun, didn’t make any of the lists ? C’mon Rolling Stone… one of the best songs ever to come out of George Harrison, let alone The Beatles.. a song about re-birth, saying good bye to cold and darkness… what the heck ?

With that said, this is NOT my list, but a combined list from the above three music resources. But let me know what YOU think what are your favorite Summer Songs.. what should have been included… what should have been left off and tell me why ? You can see each of my sources full lists in the links below.…
